ChemBase is a database that was designed in our group to keep track of the chemicals that we have and their location. The database is installed on Melvin and operates using MSAccess. At the moment, a new version of ChemBase is being developed that makes use of php. The main advantage of a web based database is that it will be accessible from everywhere.

Keeping ChemBase up-to-date

A chemicals database can only be useful if people keep the contents up-to-date. It is therefore important that you update the database each time that you empty a bottle, or buy a new one. Adding or removing chemicals is very straightforward, though a simple manual can be found at

About once every year, typically during the lab cleaning day the week before Christmas, the inventory will be checked. Usually this is a group effort.
